DePaul University's Ray
Meyer Fitness and Recreation
Center opened its doors to its
students and community on
September 1, 1999, reshaping the
Lincoln Park campus in Chicago.
Designed by Antunovich
Associates, the four-level, 120,000
s.f. facility features a six-lane, 25-
yard swimming pool, four
basketball courts, three racquetball
courts, a 200-meter running track,
a nearly 7,000 s.f. fitness area and
more than 12,000 s.f. of strength
and conditioning equipment. The
Center also includes a snack bar
and lounge where people socialize
and study.
The building was dedicated
in a ceremony on September 30,
1999, featuring former DePaul
University men's basketball coach
Ray Meyer, for whom the
Recreation Center is named, and
one of his former Blue Demon
players, NBA forward Tyrone
Corbin. During the ceremony,
Meyer dedicated the building by
sinking a basket on one of the new
basketball courts.
Because the student popula-
tion has tripled in the past 15
years, DePaul University has
moved to further develop its
Lincoln Park campus. O'Neil is
currently working with DePaul on
several other new student
resources, including the DePaul
Athletic Center at the corner of
Sheffield and Belden, two new
dorm buildings on Racine and
Clifton, and a partial renovation of
Munroe Hall.
DePaul University Continues Enhancement
With more than 12,000 s.f. of strength and conditioning equipment,
DePaul's new facility will encourage health by supporting fitness.
Former DePaul University men's basketball coach Ray Meyer shows his
excitement for the new Fitness and Recreation Center with a slam-dunk.
