Discussions with EARL
In June Sue Taylor (JUGL Secretary) visited EARL
to explore ways in which JUGL and EARL might
develop co-operation, particularly in the light of the
report New Library : the people's network.
It was recognised that the two organisations
represent different sectors of the profession but
we felt that network developments and
government initiatives were bringing us closer
together. Furthermore, the wealth of experience
which JUGL libraries and their staff have built up
in the area of electronic information should be
available to help other colleagues.
The following actions were agreed:
s
that JUGL should become Associate
Partners of EARL this has since been
ratified by the EARL Management Board
and the JUGL Committee
s
that a representative of EARL should
attend a future JUGL Committee meeting
to detail further developments at EARL -
this will happen on April 26th
s
that JUGL should consider topics of
interest to the EARL libraries when planning
future conferences and meetings and publicise
events accordingly.
JIBS user group
Betsy Anagnostelis (Chair of the JIBS User
Group) joined a recent Committee meeting to
discuss the future relationship between JIBS and
JUGL. We jointly identified areas of interest to
the two groups and will be working to co-
operate on issues which we believe are of
concern to our constituent members.
Discussion with David Haynes
At the February 1999 JUGL Committee meeting
David Haynes outlined the research being carried
out by David Haynes Associates to prepare for the
incorporation of BLRIC into the LIC. In particular,
it was concerned with identifying issues faced by
researchers in the LIS sector and the relationship
between research funding bodies. Discussions had
been held with various other LIS groupings such as
BAILER and SCONUL.
Committee members outlined their interests and
then fed back views to David on various broad
headings which he had identified e.g.
dissemination of research; bureaucracy involved;
identification of funding.
Committee members and others were invited to
send any additional comments direct to David at
