What types of linking or embedded functionality are provided?
(Note: while the terms client, server, object linking and object embedding may be specific to MS Windows implementation, they have
specific analogs in other GUIs or OSs as defined here.)
Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) allows presentations of data [objects] to be embedded in another application. The application
knows which other application created the object and how to display it. For example, a CAD drawing may store a voice object from an
external sound recorder application or a pie chart from a spreadsheet.
OLE2 is a name for in-place OLEthe menus change to the appropriate application with out having to re-launch a new program.
Object Embedding is the type of OLE where the object is placed into the target application file.
Object Linking is the type of OLE where a reference to the object is placed into the target application file. When the application needs
the actual data it goes to the source of the objectthus the term linkingthe target file is linked to the source file.
A Client is the application that receives an embedded or linked object (supports embedded or linked objects).
A Server is the application that has its object embedded or linked into a client (creates embedded or linked objects).
