Modern's
Modern
Nuts & Bolts
It may seem like a strange time of year
to ask, but how many tons of turkeys do
you think Modern Continental pur-
chases each fall to distribute to employ-
ees at Thanksgiving? Find the answer a
little later in Nuts & Bolts...
Earlier this year, Modern was listed
in a feature done by Boston Magazine
for the 115 best places to work in and
around the city. The list was compiled
based on factors including financial se-
curity, health and wellness benefits, re-
wards and incentive programs, training,
morale, and quality of life. Modern also
made Forbes list of Biggest Private Com-
panies, ranking 325th nationwide.
Congratulations to Modern's Mary
Slack (Industrial Park office), who received
her BS in business administration from
Northeastern University this past June.
Modern's Braintree-Weymouth
jobsite was the scene for a celebrity visit
last April, as rap star Ice-T stopped in to
tape a segment for a series of programs
called "Real Tough." In the series, Ice-T
will be talking to people who work in
hazardous fields such as construction and
firefighting. Crews at the jobsite reported
the rap star to be a personable, friendly
guy and said it was a treat to meet him.
Dan McNichol, former Deputy Di-
rector of Public Information for the Cen-
tral Artery, has written a pair of books about
Boston's Big Dig. Featuring pages and pages
of outstanding photography by Andy Ryan
and Stephen SetteDucati, the books
titled The Big Dig and The Big Dig at Night
tell the story behind one of the biggest
construction projects in history. McNichol
was glad to hear that The Scoop would in-
clude an announcement about the books.
"The Big Dig is Modern's Hoover Dam,"
said McNichol. "It's the project right in
your own backyard that's earned world
wide recognition for your company."
To answer the question posed earlier,
the total number of tons of turkeys that
the company purchases for employees at
Thanksgiving is: Just under 24!
S
pearin, Preston & Burrows, Inc. (SPB),
a New York-based marine construction
firm with 113 years of experience in the
industry, has joined the Modern Continental
family of companies.
The acquisition, which was finalized last
year, allows Modern to take on more challeng-
ing marine construction jobs in a more cost-
effective manner. SPB benefits from becom-
ing part of one of the country's largest con-
struction companies.
Originally named the Spearin Preston
Construction Company, SPB was founded in
1888 by brothers-in-law George B. Spearin and
Ralph Preston. Some of the firm's earlier work
includes the original Ellis Island Ferry Termi-
nal, extensive repairs on the steamship and rail-
road piers on the New York and New Jersey
shorelines, and a drydock for the Brooklyn
SP&B brings marine expertise to MCC
Navy Yard in 1908. In more recent decades,
SPB has worked on runway extensions at
LaGuardia Airport, coffer dams and landfills
for the World Trade Center and Battery Park,
and bulkhead repairs at JFK Airport, among
other major projects. SPB is also the sole East
Coast licensee for the Harmstorf Embedment
Method (subaqueous ducts and cables) and the
sole New York/New Jersey licensee for the
Insituform® Process of Pipeline Rehabilitation.
"Spearin is delighted to bring to Mod-
ern Continental its strong experience in the
New York Metropolitan area as well as the
Philadelphia and southern New Jersey re-
gions," said Gerard A. Neumann, Chairman
of the Board for Spearin, Preston & Burrows.
"We look forward to helping Modern Con-
tinental expand in marine construction and
land pile driving operations." Modern Trea-
surer Ken Anderson expressed similar
thoughts. "We're very happy to have Spearin,
Preston & Burrows be a part of Modern
Continental," he said. "They're a good com-
pany with a solid history, and this has made
Modern a more diverse and capable firm."
Spearin, Preston & Burrows crews use the Harmstorf fixed
injector to bury two cables for the NY Telephone Com-
pany across the Hudson River.
