Modern Continental Companies, Inc. - scoop summer 2001
Located just outside Brooklyn, NY, the 297-acre Foun-
tain Avenue Landfill will be capped as part of the New
York City Department of Environmental Protection's plan
to improve the area around Jamaica Bay. Eventually,
the DEP plans to turn control of the land over to the
city's Parks Department so it can be turned into a
vibrant natural resource. The Bay is a haven for wildlife
such as these Canada Geese flying against the New
York skyline.
NY office submits low bid to cap
Fountain Avenue Landfill in Brooklyn
M
odern Continental's New York office
recently submitted a low bid of $141.6
million for a contract to cap the Foun-
tain Avenue Landfill in Brooklyn, NY.
The project, which is being administered
by the New York City Department of Envi-
ronmental Protection (DEP), involves barg-
ing and placing nearly 1.75 million cubic
yards of landfill contouring and capping
material. Additionally, the job includes the
installation of over 280 acres of 40-millime-
ter LLDPE liner, approximately 190 acres
of drainage geocomposite, 75,000 linear feet
of gas collection piping, and miscellaneous
storm water piping and drainage systems.
Modern will also undertake an extensive
landscaping program at the 275-acre land-
fill that includes placing over 575,000 cubic
yards of topsoil and nearly 40,000 trees,
plants, and shrubs.
Slated to begin following construction of
a new pier being built under a separate DEP
contract, the Foundation Avenue Landfill cap-
ping is scheduled to commence sometime af-
ter April 2002. The project duration is four
years, plus a two-year contract for landscape
maintenance. The job is part of the DEP's
long-term remediation plan for the Fountain
Avenue Landfill. According to a statement re-
leased by the DEP, "The completion of (this
project) will convert the landfill into land-
scaped open space and will greatly improve
the environment surrounding Jamaica Bay,"
a refuge for many types of wildlife.
Modern Senior Vice President John
McNamara said that with a big job recently
finishing up for the New York office (see story
below), submitting the low bid for Fountain
Ave. couldn't have come at a better time for
the company's affiliate in the Big Apple.
"This job will go a long way in solidifying
our commitments in the New York market,"
John said. "We now have several years of work
to look forward to, and the timing is perfect."
The contract was officially awarded on
(date) after a 60-day waiting period.
I
n other big news for the New York of
fice, the Associated General Contrac
tors of America (AGC) recently hon-
ored Modern with an Excellence in
Partnering Award for the Woodhaven Bou-
levard Bridge rehabilitation project. The
award credits the joint effort by Modern
Continental and the New York State De-
partment of Transportation (NYSDOT)
for "successfully completing all project re-
quirements within the confines of the
project's scope and contractual limita-
tions." The $15.4 million job called for
the construction of new piers and abut-
ments, new structural steel, and new ap-
proach slabs and ramps for the refurbished
Woodhaven Boulevard Bridge.
