M
odern's West Coast affiliate, Modern
Continental Pacific, has been awarded
a $5.7 million railroad track grading/
railroad bridge job with the Alameda Corridor
Transportation Authority (ACTA).
The job designated by the ACTA as
Segment 3, Phase I is an extension of Mod-
ern Pacific's Dominguez Channel project. In
turn, the Dominguez project (a $20 million
Pacific wins $5.7M contract
contract) is part of the state's plan to build a
20-mile, intermodal railroad aimed at speed-
ing travel and cargo around the busy cities
of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Segment 3, Phase I will include track work,
concrete demolition, utility work, excavation,
and grading. Modern Pacific won the contract
in December and will be operating out of ex-
isting offices near Dominguez Channel.
M
odern Continental has won a $31.2
million contract with the Central
Artery/Tunnel Project to build the
southbound viaducts and ramps for the in-
terchange at Route 93 and the Massachu-
setts Turnpike. Modern's low bid, which was
just $600,000 below the nearest competitor,
was announced on January 23.
Overall, the job (contract number C09C3)
consists of 420 linear feet of boat sections and
770 feet of concrete viaducts. Also included is
the construction of several temporary roadways,
as well as de-leading and prime coating a ma-
jority of the exposed structural steel in the ex-
isting Dewey Square Tunnel.
According to the CA/T's Notice To Con-
tractors, the job will include "site preparation;
obstruction removal; installation of drilled shaft
foundations; demolition of retaining walls;
ramp and bridge construction; temporary and
permanent utilities relocation; protection and
maintenance of utilities; temporary vehicular
and pedestrian staging; maintenance of traffic;
signage; temporary mitigation measures to pre-
vent movement of adjacent structures; tempo-
rary and final surface drainage systems; tem-
porary and final street lighting; (and) tempo-
rary and final street paving."
Just as a new CA/T job begins for Mod-
ern, another contract C17A2, the State
Street job reached substantial completion
late last year. Crews are putting the final
touches on four northbound lanes and four
southbound lanes underneath the city that,
when the overall project is completed, will
form the new Central Artery from State Street
to North Street.
More CA/T work ahead
