The card number is found on the
back to the right of the phrase,
"Series of 50". The same crossed
hockey sticks and puck design over
the series' name "Hockey Series",
is found on the C56 series,
suggesting that the same producer
issued the C56 and C57 issues.
Each card measures 1 1/2" x 2
1 / 2 " .
Players in the 1911-12 set are
exact duplicates of those on the
1910-11 postcard issue. The player
photos appear to form the models
for the drawings used on this set.
The colour portrait is framed by two
hockey sticks. Both the front and
back of the card are numbered.
Each card measures 1-1/2" x 2-
1 / 2 " .
All these cards are considered
rookie cards. Cards are numbered
on the upper left corner. The player's
name and team appear on the
bottom border. The name of the
series, Hockey Series, appears on
the back with a picture of two
inverted crossed hockey sticks with
a puck below them. Each card
measures 1-1/2" x 2-1/2".
This card was part of
a six series, 25-card
college set. It is the
only hockey card in
the series. The card
measures 2 1/8" x 2
1 1 / 1 6 " .
The first hockey card sets: C56, C55, C57
The C55 series was the first to be catalogued by Jefferson Burdick (American Card Catalogue), but
we've since come to understand that the C56 series was in fact produced a year earlier. From that first
series, there is a number-37 salesman card of Newsy Lalonde. Salesmen would
have taken this card to various retail stores to promote the product and to explain
how they could sell more tobacco with the help of this card inside the package.
Today, we can look back and see that every significant Hall of Fame hon-
oured member from that time period is included in one of those three sets. The
top star is Georges Vézina (C55) and his card is one of the most valuable hockey
cards ever.
The toughest series is by far the C57 set, but it is also the least collected. The
toughest series to find in premium condition is the C56 set because it has been
handled the most. The toughest card to find in nice condition is the Vézina C57
card (#1) with the best known example in EX-EX+ condition. The next toughest
is the C56 card (#36) of Newsy Lalonde.
