City Care - Performance report 2006
23
Figure L illustrates the percentage of safe behaviours
recorded from all observations to date.
While City Care expects that Behave Safe will encourage a
shift to a more safety conscious culture amongst our staff, we
anticipate that it will be several months before these changes
are reflected in reducing accident trends. The adjacent graphs
track our performance in terms of the frequency and severity
of accidents amongst City Care staff.
Our lost time injury frequency rate has dropped from a 12
month rolling average of 4.5 LTI's per 100,000 hours worked
at June 2005 to 4.0 LTI's per 100,000 hours worked at June
2006.
c
As illustrated by Figure M, this is significantly less than
the New Zealand industry average and is getting closer to our
target of the Australian industry average, although there is
still some way to go to achieve this.
The severity of injuries occurring has remained fairly static
since late 2003 as Figure N shows.
d
The company is targeting
a reduction in this area in the coming year by concentrating
on reducing the number of incidents occurring and an
improved focus on rehabilitation of injured workers.
Other health and safety initiatives
In April 2006 City Care received a special judges award at the
New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards for the
company's Health and Safety DVD. The awards are supported
by the Department of Labour.
Spotting spots
City Care recognises that melanoma can be a hazard for some of our employees. In addition to encouraging the use of sunhats and
sunscreen for those employees who work outside, the company holds annual skin spot clinics.
Skin checks are offered to all staff in Christchurch, including both field and office staff. Those employees who take up the offer are
usually people who are at risk of skin abnormalities, or those who want to seek reassurance regarding large or unusual moles or
other skin marks.
In 2006 107 people took advantage of the opportunity to have their skin checked for any abnormalities or changes. Approximately
one-quarter of those examined, or about 27 people, were referred for further consultation to either their own GP or specialist.
Christine McHugh, Business Processes Administrator at City Care's Milton Street Branch manages the logistics of City Care's annual
health checks. Christine comments that "we care for our people and we are pleased to be able to provide an extra means of
reassurance to them where health matters are concerned." This is backed up by the other health clinics held at City Care each year
including hearing checks, lung function tests and flu vaccinations.
Those employees who take up the offer of skin checks have indicated that they appreciate City Care providing the clinics as it offers
them peace of mind. Employees who are referred for further consultation are also grateful to receive an early diagnosis as they may
not have otherwise discovered a problem if City Care had not offered these skin checks.
