City Care has retained certification of the company's health
and safety management systems to NZS 4801 and ACC
tertiary level. Our major competitors are also either
secondary or tertiary accredited or are in the ACC partner-
ship programme.
Behave safe
This year City Care transformed the way we approach health
and safety within the company by launching our Behave Safe
initiative. The idea of this programme is to promote safe
behaviour by encouraging a culture of health and safety
awareness so that everyone who works at City Care feels
comfortable looking out for the safety of themselves and
their workmates.
Observations are the cornerstone of Behave Safe
employees openly observe each other during the normal
course of their work and record their findings on observation
forms. They then provide each other with positive feedback
on safe behaviours observed and areas where improvements
could be made, as well as recording a tally of the total
percentage of safe behaviours observed.
The completed observation forms are forwarded to the
administration team so that results can be recorded and any
suggestions for improvements in health and safety can be
implemented across the company. No names are recorded
in the process so that there are no negative consequences
for individuals being observed.
As Figure K shows we have succeeded in steadily increasing
the number of observations undertaken each month since
Behave Safe was launched in October 2005. This is a positive
reflection of the changing health and safety culture within the
company as regular observations of safety behaviour have
become part of the way our staff go about their everyday
work activities.
