Keeping each other safe
at work
In April 2005 City Care embarked on a crusade to improve
staff safety. Although we have comprehensive health and safety
systems too many of our staff are still getting injured at work.
We want everyone to understand that:
"it's not ok to be hurt
at work."
Most accidents in the workplace are a direct result of human
behaviour. Both common sense and empirical research suggest
that by increasing safe behaviours and decreasing at-risk
behaviours at work we can reduce the numbers of accidents
and incidents that occur in the workplace.
City Care has engaged a behaviour analyst to help us develop
and implement a behavioural approach to safety that will
work for City Care. The aim of the Behave Safe programme
is to support safe behaviour and encourage staff to look after
themselves and others in the workplace. A critical element of this
approach is the introduction of safety coaching which involves
staff observing each other carrying out their work and providing
one-on-one feedback on the safe and at-risk behaviours
observed.
As at the end of June 2005, the Behave Safe project was
well underway with a Staff Health and Safety Culture survey
complete and a plan and timeframe for the implementation of
the project in place.
To support the Behave Safe process, City Care also decided
to produce a new health and safety induction DVD (a copy of
which is included with this report). The DVD is intended to give
health and safety a livelier image and uses a communications
style targeted at the younger generation of new workers joining
City Care. It is one of a range of health and safety tools that the
company will use to support Behave Safe. The video has been
designed to focus on common and high risk hazards selected
by our Health and Safety Coordinating Team based on accident
and incident reporting data.
The video has been produced using two actors and a number
of City Care staff. The reaction of all staff involved in the video
has been very positive. For some it has been quite challenging,
but all have participated with a great attitude. We look forward
to reporting on the results of the Behave Safe programme in our
next year's report.
