Denver's story from drop-out
to role model
Denver McMoore is a fine example of how City Care's training
and mentoring systems are helping employees to reach their
full potential.
Denver's lack of attention at school affected his learning and
resulted in him being told to leave. After "bumming around"
for a year, he joined City Care's Pre-Apprentice Work Skills
Programme in 2002, where he struggled with regular attendance
and timekeeping: "I was late quite a lot and the first year was a
huge learning curve for me. I was working with a lot of different
people and I found this hard as I was quite shy. By the end
of the year though I was really coming out of my shell",
says Denver.
Denver really clicked with Underground Services and decided to
specialise in water maintenance and reticulation. He found the
work to be challenging, mentally and physically demanding, and
it kept him fit. He describes the staff as great to work with and
really supportive of the Pre-Apprentices. Denver says that as a
person he has really grown up to become more responsible and
less lazy.
Denver was given increased responsibility quickly as he
blossomed in his role. "For the last year I've been on call-outs
and I'm making good money, plus there's no boss looking
over my shoulder all the time - they trust me. The work is really
interesting and I get some really big jobs to do like blown water
mains with 200 mm pipes. I've even got my own truck!"
Denver is excited about his future. He has just completed
the Level 3 National Certificate in Water and Waste Water
Reticulation and he is the first Pre-Apprentice to complete
a qualification at level 3. In fact, Denver is one of only a few
people in New Zealand that have completed this relatively
new qualification.
