CITY CARE ETHNICITY
agreements require staff to work more than 40 hours per
week, but management and peer pressure is likely to create
instances where employees do work longer than they would
otherwise choose.
The graph below right shows the number of staff who worked
more than 48 hours each week in the last year. It also shows the
number of hours worked by the individual at the 90
th
percentile,
and the highest number of hours worked by any individual each
week.
Note b
For each event where someone works more than 80 hours,
a report is generated for senior management, so that we can
assess whether we have a justified one-off instance or some
regular work or management practices causing long hours.
In the last year the maximum number of hours worked by
any staff member during any one week was 85 hours during
the week of 23rd February. The same individual also worked
80.25 hours the previous week. The staff member involved
was running the night shift on a high profile roading job in a
busy Christchurch intersection, and was also responsible for
conducting the handover of the site to the day crew. Due to the
nature of this project much of the construction work was carried
out at night to avoid peak traffic flows.
Staff Economic Wellbeing
To provide an indication of the financial situation of our staff,
City Care monitors the remuneration and work conditions of
our Least Advantaged Employee (LAE) on an annual basis. To
choose the LAE, City Care sorts all permanent employees by
total annual remuneration, and then chooses the person at the
top of the lowest decile
Note c
to give a typical representation of
the least advantaged group.
This year our LAE earned gross remuneration of $31,114, plus
an additional $412 of medical insurance subsidy and non-
taxable allowances of $352. His pay rate was $14.45 per hour,
and he worked 1812 hours for the year, taking 6 days off on sick
