New markets, new customers
Parks and facilities maintenance expansion
City Care achieved two significant contract wins during the latter
part of the year. The first was our successful bid to secure the
maintenance contract for approximately one-third of Tauranga's
parks and all of its sportsfields. As our first major parks
maintenance contract win outside of Christchurch and a prime
opportunity to build on our existing partnership with Tauranga City
Council this was a very important milestone for the company.
The second was the award to City Care of the contract to
maintain Dunedin City Council's housing portfolio. As well as
being our first facilities maintenance contract outside of
Christchurch, this contract win was also very significant as it
heralded the opening of a new City Care branch in Dunedin
and the start of a new partnership with Dunedin City Council.
The start date for both of the above contracts was 1 July 2005.
Asset services
City Care expanded into the asset services market, undertaking
an asset collection project for Christchurch City Council,
which involved digitally recording all park assets (seats, paths,
buildings, shrub beds etc). We used GPS and data logging tools
to record the information in such a way that Council could load
location coordinates and asset descriptions directly into their
GIS mapping system. The end result of the project was an asset
database and digital map accurately showing all the assets in
each park and their location and size.
Another project for New Plymouth District Council involved
asset data collection and condition assessment of the Council's
building assets. This project delivered a comprehensive review
of building assets, construction materials, current condition and
the expected future life of major components. The information
gathered allowed the Council to complete its strategic asset
management plan.
The asset services team also completed asset data collection
for Victoria University's building assets and developed scheduled
maintenance tasks for the University's buildings and core
mechanical services.
CUSTOMERS
Roading growth
City Care's acquisition of Local Construction in November 2004
has enabled the company to increase the size of its roading
operations in Christchurch. The additional 75 staff and large
fleet of plant and equipment have assisted us in securing several
large contracts including Transit New Zealand's $800,000
Empire Road project, the $1.7 million Wainoni Road project
for Christchurch City Council and the combined Transit New
Zealand/Christchurch City Council Opawa Rd project, worth
$2.2 million.
Our new resources also allowed us to complete our first civil
construction project for the fuel industry when we installed a
25,000 litre gantry tank at the Port of Lyttelton.
In addition to enhancing the company's roading and civil
construction capabilities, the purchase has extended City Care's
services to include specialist traffic management, driveway
construction, decorative concrete, kerb and channel, drainage
construction, paving and the sale of landscape supplies.
Revenue from customers other than CCC
Revenue from customers other than the Christchurch City
Council increased this year to $39.3 million from $23.1 million in
the previous year. Non-CCC customers now account for 47.8%
of City Care's business.
