NOTES TO THE PERFORMANCE
SUMMARY
a. This is calculated based on
the size of Christchurch Parks
in 1999. Since this time CCC
has increased the area under
maintenance, and incurred
additional costs relative to this
increase.
b. Core environmental indicators
were selected under criteria laid
down in the World Business
Council for Sustainable
Development report
 Measuring Eco-efficiency, a
Guide to Reporting Company
Performance.
c. Energy efficiency improved by
12% while total energy usage
increased because revenue
grew by close to 20%.
d. For the purpose of calculating
energy consumption and
greenhouse gas emissions,
and to avoid the possibility of
society double counting, City
Care sets strict boundaries and
calculates only the company's
direct effect. We do not take
into account supplier activity like
air travel and subcontractors'
vehicles, or the energy and
greenhouse gas effects from
the construction of plant and
equipment we purchase.
e. The conversion to households
uses the latest information
available from the Ministry for
the Environment. This provides
that the average residential
energy use is 43.76 gigajoules
per household.
f. Conversion of greenhouse
gasses to native forest
consumption is based on the
EBEX21 project of Landcare
Research Ltd.
g. Based on John Rawls' A Theory
of Justice (1971)
h. The top of the lowest decile
is chosen to filter out part-
time staff or trainees who
may be being supported to
complete substantial training
programmes.
i. Annual hours worked are the
physical hours spent on the
job. Total paid hours include
holidays, sick and special pay.
j. City Care reports the number
of staff working more than
48 hours as the International
Labour Organisation convention
of working hours specifies
that the normal working week
should not exceed 48 hours,
and that work over those hours
should be voluntary and penal
rates should apply. City Care's
normal working week is 40
hours, but many staff routinely
work longer hours than this.
