City Care - Performance Report 2004

A major part of City Care's work is
to provide positive environmental
benefits for the communities in
which we operate. We maintain
city parks and gardens to provide
living environments for residents.
We preserve the integrity of
wastewater networks to minimise
leakages and overflows. We
keep waterways and storm-water
systems cleared and functioning
to minimise the consequences of
flooding. We scrub city streets and
pavements, clean up spills and
remove litter.
For many of our contracts we
have developed and implemented
environmental management plans.
We have maintained accreditation to
ISO 14001 and Enviromark Diamond,
to ensure we have appropriate
managements systems in place
and that we comply with relevant
standards and resource consents.
City Care has adopted three core
indicators of our major negative
environmental impacts
Note b
- energy
use, greenhouse gas emissions and
waste to landfill.
Energy Use
(see graphs above)
In simple terms, City Care continues
to appear more energy efficient
each year. On the standard
international measure of energy
eco-efficiency gigajoules per
million dollars of revenue City
Care improved 12% from the prior
year with a result of 1440 GJ/$M.
However, the downward trend
is more a consequence of a
changing mix of work and greater
use of subcontractors than from a
fundamental change in efficiency.
Total energy consumed increased
to 90,202 GJ
Note c & d
(prior year
86,280 GJ). This is equivalent to
that consumed by 2061 average
households
Note e
.
The majority of our energy comes
from diesel, which is used to run
our heavy fleet and asphalt plant.
