HEALTH AND SAFETY
This year, City Care's health and
safety management systems have
been re-certified for compliance with
NZS 4801 and the health and safety
component of Enviromark Diamond
(see table D below).
While the frequency of lost time
injuries has only marginally improved
during the year, our focus on better
management of rehabilitation
and focus on early reporting and
intervention has substantially reduced
the severity of those accidents (see
graphs). Noise induced hearing loss
notifications also reduced by
one third.
Other new H&S initiatives included:
· employee participation systems
introduced in advance of
legislation that required the
agreement of 5 unions and 120
individuals.
· procedures implemented for
dealing with difficult customers
in refuse station, a source of
employee stress.
· injury prevention through
workstation assessment, manual
handling training, Healthy
Workplaces pilot, and nutrition/
hydration education.
· increased profile on inducting and
reviewing subcontractors.
· the introduction of a safe work
practices rate into the base pay of
the AWUNZ (Southern) collective
employment agreement.
We also established H&S systems for
our new operation in New Plymouth.
In our annual staff survey, employees
continue to strongly agree that City
Care takes health and safety in the
workplace seriously. Around 25%
of staff also took up the company's
offers of free flu vaccinations and skin
spot checks.
