City Care - Performance Report 2004

The most significant social impact City
Care has is the way our relationship
with our staff affects their economic,
physical and mental wellness, and
that of their partners and dependents.
As a company we strive to be a good
employer, principally because we
believe it is the ethically appropriate
approach, but also because we
believe it makes good business
sense, especially now that the labour
market is extremely tight.
City Care has recently adopted the
target of achieving accreditation to
the Investors in People standard as a
means to show potential employees
that City Care is a good employer.
Employment Contracts
Five unions represent around 85%
of City Care employees, including
a number of salaried staff. City
Care has 8 collective employment
agreements with these unions. In
the last year all agreements were
renegotiated without work stoppage.
In all agreements we now have hourly
pay made up from a base rate plus
a number of additional variable scale
rates. For example, a Christchurch
carpenter's hourly pay will be made
up of a base rate plus a skill rate,
responsibility rate, productivity rate
and public relations performance
rate. Others wages include a safety

Finally, City Care's culture, which
values openness, honesty and
integrity, empowers all staff to do
what is right for our customers.
In the last year we have had one
significant quality failure, relating
to fittings supplied to us for a pipe
construction job in Auckland. This
issue was still being resolved with our
supplier and customer at year-end.
Average Customer Satisfaction was
back down this year to the levels
achieved in 2002. When asked the
question "On a scale of 1 to 10,
how would you rate your overall
satisfaction with City Care?" (FIG.06.

our customers gave us an
average rating of 6.4 (prior year 6.8).
APR-04: City Care workshops purchase
emission tester to access and improve the
environmental performance of our fleet.
